In my previous post, I wrote about the three phases of healing.

  1. Protection

  2. Inflammatory

  3. Proliferation/Repair

  4. Remodeling

So with this post, we will discuss what that looks like practically. Basically, what will it feel like as we help guide you through recovery and restore your function. From pain relief, to building strength and function, and finally to long-term self-management.

So I want to unpack the "how" - the science and the personalised strategies that our clinic employs to get you not just feeling better, but staying better.

The "Top-Down" Difference: Functional Neurological Principles in Practice

At our core, we believe that true healing starts from the brain first. We utilise functional neurology principles and techniques to understand how your brain and nervous system are communicating with your body. Why is this important? Because your brain is the master controller of everything, including how you perceive pain, how your muscle behave, and how efficiently you move through space.

A "top-down" or "brain-first" approach means we are not just chasing symptoms; we are addressing the underlying neural patterns that might be contributing to your pain and dysfunction. By improving this brain-body communication, we enhance your body's natural ability to heal, adapt, and perform. This leads to more robust and long-lasting results. This is about retraining your system for optimal function.

The Three Phases of Your Journey

So here is a look at the action taken in each phase of recovery.

Phase 1: Pain Relief and Mobility (Calming the Storm):

When you first come to us, our priority is to address your immediate discomfort. Think of this as putting out the fire. In this initial phase, often requiring 2-3 visits per week for a few weeks, we focus on:

  • Reducing inflammation and pain, using gentle techniques to soothe irritated tissues.

  • Restoring basic movement and helping stiff joints and muscles regain their natural range of motion.

  • Education: Understanding your pain is a powerful tool. We will help you make sense of what is happening in your body.

Phase 2: Strength & Function (Building Resilience):

Once the acute pain subsides, we shift gears. This phase is about building a strong, resilient foundation to prevent the problem from returning. You'll typically transition to 1-2 visits per week (case dependent), focusing on:

  • Targeted strengthening: Identifying and correcting movement imbalances.

  • Functional training: Re-training movements specific to your daily life, work, or sport.

  • Stablisation: Enhancing core strength and joint stability to support healthy movement.

  • Phase 3: Self-Management & Prevention (Your Long-Term Health Partner):

Our ultimate goal is to empower you to be independent in managing your own health. In this final phase, which may involve less frequent visits (e.g., monthly or quarterly check-ins), we equip you with:

  • Personalised home exercise programmes: Tools to maintain your progress and continue getting stronger.

  • Ergonomic and lifestyle advice: Strategies to minimise stress on your body in your daily life.

  • Advanced self-care techniques: How to address minor flare-ups independently.

A Personalised Tool-Kit: Techniques Bespoke for YOU

This is where the "art" meets the "science". There is no one-size-fits-all solution, and that's why our approach is highly individualised.

  • Spinal manipulation: This can be an incredibly effective tool for restoring joint motion and reducing a pain response for some patients. If it's appropriate for your condition and history, we'll discuss how it can be integrated into your plan. However, it's just one tool in our extensive toolkit.

  • Soft Tissue Therapies: Addressing muscle tension, scar tissue, and restrictions.

  • Corrective exercises: Specifically designed to improve strength, flexibility, balance, and motor control.

  • Advanced Modalities: To boost your recovery, we may utilise a range of technologies, such as Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) to accelerate cellular healing and reduce inflammation. This tool, amongst many others, just help us get you feeling better faster.

Beyond the Tip of the Iceberg

As we often say, the pain you feel is often just the tip of the iceberg. It is a signal, but beneath the surface lies the true culprits: perhaps long-standing muscle imbalances, poor movement patterns, joint dysfunctions, or even a heightened neural sensitivity. Our commitment is to dive deep, identify these root causes, and build a comprehensive plan that not only gets you out of pain, but rewires your body for sustained health.

We are excited to partner with you on this functional journey. If you're ready to experience a personalised approach to lasting relief, we're here to help.
